The new alignment will have a total length of 8.4 kilometres and will be constructed as a four‑lane motorway with a speed limit of 100 km/h. The new route will remove a bottleneck and significantly improve traffic safety along the stretch.

The scope of work includes:

  • Establishment of two motorway interchanges
  • Construction of two tunnels, measuring approximately 800 metres and 3.4 kilometres respectively
  • Five bridges, the longest with a span of up to 220 metres
  • Relocation of approximately 3 million cubic metres of material

The existing E16 will be rebuilt and adapted as a local road, combined with pedestrian and bicycle paths. On the 3.5‑kilometre stretch towards Sollihøgda, the maximum permitted gradient of 5 percent is utilised.

Parts of the road will be constructed in open cuts and will involve extensive rock excavation, controlled blasting, and large‑scale earthmoving. The project area is located near a protected watercourse, a nature reserve, and the boundary of the Marka recreational area, which places strict requirements on execution and environmental stewardship.

External Environment and HSE – Challenges and Measures

The project has been carried out with particular emphasis on safeguarding both the external environment and health, safety and environment (HSE) throughout the entire construction period. Its location near vulnerable natural areas, watercourses, and the boundary of the recreational zone, combined with demanding tunnel operations, has placed high requirements on planning, technical solutions, and continual follow‑up. Through targeted measures, the use of appropriate materials, and systematic monitoring, environmental impact has been minimised and safety for both workers and road users has been strengthened.
